Health Risks of a Large Belly

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Did you know that a large belly carries a risk for coronary artery disease comparable to smoking a pack of cigarettes daily or having high cholesterol? People with coronary artery disease and expanded waistlines are at more than twice the risk of dying, including those with a Body Mass Index in the normal range. Even more dangerous is the visceral fat that surrounds the internal organs. This internal fat actually makes up a large proportion of the waist measurement. Visceral fat is more metabolically active and can produce hormones and other substances that have a negative impact on your health, including increasing the risk of heart disease; high blood pressure; stroke; type 2 diabetes; metabolic syndrome; some types of cancer; and sleep apnea.

What is BMI? Assessing Your Body

Friday, August 5th, 2011

To better understand the problem of obesity, we need to first understand the clinical application of this term, including how obesity is determined.

What does “obese” actually mean? The word “obese” means being so overweight it is detrimental to one’s health. In clinical terms, obesity is determined by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI) of an individual, based on his height and weight. This can be done in either American Imperial units or, more traditionally, in metric units based upon mass (weight) in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. A simple method for Americans to use is provided below:

In the United States using Imperial units:
BMI = mass (lb) x 703 ÷ height (inches)2.

BMI does not actually measure the percentage of body fat but it is an excellent resource for gauging the approximation of body fat an individual has, especially if that person has a more sedentary lifestyle. To be considered obese, a person must have a BMI of at least 30. “Seriously obese” refers to someone who has a BMI between 35 and 39 while “morbidly obese” is someone who has a BMI over 40. None of these terms are used lightly. Being referred to as obese should serve as a wake-up call to discuss with a medical professional a plan to lose weight. On average, obesity reduces life expectancy by 6-7 years, “severe obesity” by ten years. Approximately 12 million children are obese as well as 74.1 million adults.

To determine our level of “fitness” or “fatness”, we should all calculate our BMI. Anyone with a BMI over 25 is overweight and should consider a weight loss program. The higher the number is over 25, the more necessary it is to lose weight before we become another grim statistic.

Exercises for Beginners

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

We all want to look like we are fitness gurus – we just do not know how to make this happen.  As much as we would like to look our best, yesterday, it still takes some time for the beginner to get started on an exercise regimen.  It is important to remember to start a program that is workable and without doing too much too soon.  If we have led sedentary lifestyles, we could risk hurting ourselves beyond an easy way to recover.  Taking small steps and building up endurance can help us start a program that we can manage, without feeling too overwhelmed or hurt to continue.

Improve Your Skin With Exercise

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Exercise boosts blood circulation and the delivery of nutrients to your skin, helping to detoxify the body by removing toxins. As exercise boosts oxygen to the skin, it helps increase the production of collagen, the connective tissue that keeps your skin elastic.

Lean Muscle & Weight Loss

Friday, June 10th, 2011

When consulting with my patients, one of the most common questions I get regarding weight loss and exercise is: Should I do mostly cardio exercise or lift weights? My answer is always… BOTH!  Cardio/Aerobic exercise will help you burn immediate calories and it keeps your heart healthy.  I recommend a moderate (zone 2 or zone 3) pace for a minimum of 20-30 minutes, 5X/week. The machine or exercise you choose is less important than, keeping your heart rate up. I suggest finding an aerobic exercise you enjoy and starting there, it could be a simple, fast pace, 20 minute walk.

But, don’t forget the importance of weight lifting.  Cardio burns immediate calories but building lean muscle is an investment that will burn calories on a daily basis.  Muscles are metabolically active, so the more lean muscle , the more calories you burn even when you’re not working out. For each pound of muscle you add, you will burn an extra 35-50 calories per day.  Every 5 pounds of muscle added will burn 175-250 calories a day, or an extra pound of fat every 14-20 days.

Eating Strategies to Keep Off the Weight

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Good food does not need to be boring food.  People are less likely to lose weight or stay on a diet if they find that what they are eating is not enjoyable.  Therefore, it is important to find healthy foods that can be considered tasty and fun to eat.  A good, healthy, fun diet can be eaten for years without causing people to feel that their diet is monotonous or too hard to continue.  Look for recipes that incorporate fresh ingredients and an array of seasonings and spices.  Try different ethnic foods for motivation if you like to experiment.  Most importantly, (more…)

Good For The Heart = Good For The Waistline

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Heart-healthy, reduced-calorie diets are essential for losing the weight and keeping it off.  Researchers from the Preventing Overweight Using Novel Dietary Strategies (POUNDS LOST) found that people on diets that were lower in calories, saturated fat and cholesterol while being high in dietary fiber lost, on average, 13 pounds in six months and maintained a 9 pound loss for two years.  In addition, they lost between 1 and 3 inches from their waist and did not report feelings of excess hunger.

Simply stated, eating foods that are good for the heart are also foods that are good for the waistline, helping people achieve and maintain a healthy weight.  The foods that will most hurt cholesterol levels, raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes are the ones that will cause weight gain.  By substituting out unhealthy trans-fats for Omega3 fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats, you have a key strategy for improving both the waist line and heart health.

Omega 3… Your Key To Healthy Living

Friday, May 20th, 2011

We all know that diet and exercise are essential components.  Here’s another health tip that will take your health to the next level. The research and statistics come from: Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Athletics, July 2007, 6:230–236

The human diet has had major changes in the past 150 years, yet the genetic profile has changed very little, if any, in the past 10,000 to 15,000 years.  Human beings evolved consuming a diet that contained about equal amounts of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids.

Today, in Western diets, the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids ranges from approximately 10:1 to 20:1 instead of the traditional range of 1:1 to 2:1.

This ratio can cause excessive free radical formation in the body and can lead to an inflammatory state that is made worse by the increased amount of Omega 6.

This can be counteracted by supplementing, daily with Omega 3 fish oils. I recommend a minimum of (more…)

Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Because 33% of children and 66% of adults in the US are overweight or obese, the new “Dietary Guidelines for Americans,” places stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and increasing physical activity. Good nutrition is an integral component of successful aging, the benefits of a healthy diet and regular physical activity may include a more robust immune system, higher energy levels, faster recuperation times, sharper mental acuity, and better management of chronic health problems.
